NOTRE DAME, Ind. - The Notre Dame men's tennis team opens up the 2011 fall season this weekend as it travels to Chicago, Ill., to compete in the loaded Illini Invitational. The event, which takes place on clay courts, will see elite teams Alabama, California, Illinois, Kentucky and Texas join the Irish in the three-day invitational.

Notre Dame, who ended the season ranked 31st, and advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament, will face off with five other NCAA Tournament teams. Kentucky (No. 8), California (No. 14), Texas (No. 16) and Illinois (No. 17) all ended the 2011 season ranked in the top 20, and also all advanced to the second round or later of the NCAA Tournament, with Kentucky advancing all the way to the quarterfinals. Alabama finished the year 57th, and did not receive a bid to the NCAAs.

The Irish finished the 2010-11 season with an 18-12 record and return 11 players from the BIG EAST runner-up team.

Based on last season's results, three Notre Dame student-athletes received national rankings to open the season. Senior Casey Watt enters the year ranked 28th in singles, while the duo of senior Niall Fitzgerald and junior Spencer Talmadge opens the year ranked 21st in doubles.

Expected to compete for the Irish this weekend will be seniors Watt, Fitzgerald and Sam Keeton, juniors Talmadge, Blas Moros and Talmadge, sophomores Greg Andrews, Ryan Bandy and Billy Pecor and freshman Wyatt McCoy.

Lawson Tennis Team Makes School History

With two teams and 50 athletes, the middle school's tennis program celebrates its first-ever, back-to-back league championships.

By Jeremy Gibbons, Lawson athletic director

The Lawson Middle School tennis team began the year with exciting news. For the first time in school history, the tennis program was able to provide two coaches, two teams, two practice facilities and space for 50 student-athletes. Head coach Anthony Carpio practiced at Silicon Valley Tennis Academy in Mountain View with the Lawson team, and I, the other head coach, practiced with the Lightning team at Serra Park in Sunnyvale.

The tennis league is unique to the other 10 teams and sport leagues that Lawson participates in. This league has 16 teams spanning from Almaden Valley to Palo Alto and allows for boys and girls, grades 6-8 to play singles and doubles competitively against each other. The MTP (Mid-Peninsula Tennis Patrons) governs the league and has supported junior tennis for more than 25 years.

The 2010 season ended a high note, with Lawson defeating Jordan Middle School of Palo Alto by a score of 5-4, capping an 11-win, zero-loss season and winning its first tennis championship in the school's six short years.  Lawson was on the verge of something great to happen in the 2011 season.

With two teams and 50 athletes, the Lawson tennis program began in full swing the third week of March.

During the seven-match pool play, the Lawson team finished undefeated, while the Lightning team was able to manage two victories.

Every team qualifies for the playoffs, and the Lightning team occupied the 11th seed in the tournament, while the Lawson team claimed the top seed, edging out Fisher Middle School of Los Gatos.

The playoffs were high intensity, with the Lightning team losing in the second round to the eventual consolation champions from Kennedy Middle School's North team. The Lawson team, the top seed, took out Graham Middle in the first round, Kennedy Middle South in the second round, Harker Academy in the semi-finals, and then Miller Middle School. That finale game, a 7-2 victory for Lawson, was at Monta Vista High School in Cupertino on May 25.

This marks the first time in Lawson Middle School history that a team was able to repeat as league champions. The team has set the bar high, as both seasons were unblemished, matching 22 victories to zero losses.

STV Players, Coaches and Gustavo Granitto

SVT Spring Camp with Gustavo Granitto

During the week of April 18-22, 2011, the coaches and players of the Silicon Valley Tennis Academy were honored to be joined on court by coaching legend Gustavo Granitto.  Gustavo is the Founder and Director of GTC Tennis Consultancy and is also an Honorary Member Professional of the Professional Tennis Registry, USA.  Gustavo has devoted more than 30 years in the development of junior and professional players from all over the world. His passion and knowledge of the sport of tennis has greatly affected thousands of players, coaches, and officials alike.

The morning sessions typically began with the players going through a variety of dynamic warm-up drills which emphasized proper footwork, quickness, and balance.  Gustavo then emphasized the importance of the 5 parts to a tennis match, which are serving, returning, baseline game, attacking, and passing. The players then worked on all of these various components throughout the remainder of the morning sessions. Gustavo constantly reminded all players that he was looking for high intensity and high quality in all of these drills.

The afternoon sessions focused more on match play situations and fitness with the players still focusing on the 5 components of a basic tennis match.

Gustavo also reminded the players of the importance of 4 other essential aspects involved in a tennis match; technical, tactical, mental, and physical. Here again, Gustavo was looking for high intensity, high quality, and purpose in all of these various drills. At the end of the week Gustavo asked the players what they specifically would still like to work on. The responses ranged from ground strokes, to serves,

to footwork, etc. Many of the players mentioned that they were a bit tired and sore but took great pride in pushing themselves to the limit.

Both players and coaches certainly benefited from the week spent on court with Gustavo. His vision and focus in helping young players tap into their full potential and ability is truly inspiring. He created a dynamic environment with a strong emphasis on proper techniques and solid fundamentals. Gustavo definitely made all the students push themselves extremely hard but always emphasized the importance of a safe environment.  He definitely demonstrated a true love for tennis and made all the players and coaches around him feel very special.
